These are all killers, people need to get checkups and be informed of the health and risk challenges. NPU 5
I am an R.N and diabetes educator. There is knowledge deficits when it comes to the prevention. NPU 6
I chose Mental Health, Substance Abuse and Cancer because these are the silent killers among the African American community, the things that attack us that no one wants to, or they shy away from discussing. NPU 7
Nutrition, Diabetes & women's health are interrelated. Women predominantly control food selection for their households& influence lifelong eating patterns in their children. Those eating patterns determine overall health & weight. Overweight then begins a cascade of issues, including diabetes. NPU 7
Due to the lack of healthy food options in walking distance and our convenience to many fast food options, diabetes and high blood pressure might impact many residents. You can easily walk to the liquor store, Wendy's, or the gas station. In regards to mental health, I think many of our younger residents may suffer from them possibly due to over-crowding apartments and unstable households. These issues are important because I know this community can be better and with the right partners, these issues will be eliminated. NPU 3
'-Young girls need to understand the responsibility that comes along with being a mother / -People need to understand the different types of sexually transmitted diseases there are, and the symptoms that come along with them / -People need to understand the implications of high blood pressure NPU 3
Many people in the community have generational high blood pressure and diabetics. Obesity based on lack of exercise and poor nutrition leads to many diseases NPU 4
I am over all concerned about the health of women in the community NPU 3
People are taking these issues too lightly. NPU 2
Because I have raised my family in the metropolitan area since 1995 !! And in this community there have been limited resources. NPU 6
I see so many people suffering with diabetes and this disease takes a toll on the entire body. AIDS is being ignored but it is spreading fast and its hurting everyone but no one wants to talk about it. very sad. Cancer because this took so many of my family members. / NPU 6
I don't feel like young boys/girls have much access to condoms in the community. Domestic violence is something I see every now and then and would like to see some preventative measures taken. Heart disease impacts many people I assume given the lack of healthy food. NPU 3
1. Women's Issues...providing education on and support for women's medical issues goes directly to the heart of the most medically underserved community, and has the greatest benefit per dollar spent. The medical issues of women affect the primary caretakers, primary parent, least paid and most encumbered person in our communities. / 2. Nutrition. Good nutrition is a vital and missing component of preventative care in our community. By providing it early, and teaching it at a layperson level, we can attack diabetes, atherosclerosis, stroke and so many other disorders before they begin. / 3. Obesity is again, something which educating about, dealing with, and focusing on, provided a great deal of value-added impacts to adjacent and related illnesses. NPU 7
