Study Lay Summary

Daily sleep survey measuring sleep patterns in shift workers. People that work shifts not typically 9am- 5pm or called day shifts or morning shifts are recruited. They are shifts such as 3pm to 11pm or 11pm to 7am which change sleep patterns. Circadian deficiencies are found in these surveys and they find that they have a higher morbidity rate.

The objective of this study is to see if there is a link between shift work, cardiovascular health and the way our body processes energy. We will survey non-standard shift workers in metropolitan Atlanta as well as in Grady health system in response to a recuruitment flyer. The study will utilize Morningness-Eveningness survey questionnaireto collect demographic information (address, phone number, and email address), work history, sleep timing preference, general medical/health condition. The study will also ask conditions of hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, heart attack, and stroke in the immediate family health history.

We will recruit persons who are shift workersbetween 18 and 65 years of age, and have been a shift worker for at least six months. We exclude persons who work standard shift work hours (8am – 5pm).

In the future we may contact participants by phone, email or postal mail to update our records and possibly offer the opportunity to take part in additional studies.
